Mike joined the Northeastern sports medicine staff in 2013 and coordinates care for the Women’s Swimming & Diving program. He currently serves as the Director of Athletic Training, a role he has held since 2017.
At Northeastern, McKenney has been instrumental in transforming healthcare delivery in Sports Medicine, designing and creating comprehensive digital solutions that serve as communication hubs, data collection opportunities, and access points for all student-athletes and Athletics stakeholders. These solutions prioritize health care informatics, communication, and health care promotion. As a result of these efforts, a talented multidisciplinary team of health care professionals can collaborate, innovate, and utilize data-driven insights to inform medical decisions and optimize treatment outcomes.
Before arriving in Boston, he was a graduate assistant at North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota. There, he completed his master’s degree in Advanced Athletic Training and coordinated care for the baseball program while conducting research that was published in the Journal of Athletic Training. Prior to NDSU, McKenney was a physician extender at Front Range Orthopaedics in Colorado Springs, Colorado. There, he worked closely with physicians to treat patients with various different orthopedic conditions while also providing outreach services for numerous organizations to include USA Cycling with velodrome track cycling and mountain bike racing. In addition to his role as a physician extender, he was an athletic trainer at Mesa Ridge High School while providing additional outreach services to high schools in Calhan and Peyton, Colorado.
McKenney has served on the medical staff for the USA Volleyball High Performance Championships, United States Association of Blind Athletes at the World Youth and Student Games and Pan American Championships, and the volunteer medical staff for the Boston Marathon.
Originally from Colorado Springs, Colorado, McKenney completed his bachelor’s degree in athletic training at Gustavus Adolphus College in 2008. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and a Massachusetts licensed athletic trainer. Mike continues to advance the field of Athletic Training through his commitment to evidence-based practice, technological innovation, and comprehensive student-athlete care that extends beyond injury treatment to encompass performance optimization and holistic wellness support.
