Mike joined the Northeastern sports medicine staff in 2013 and currently coordinates care for the Women’s Swimming & Diving program.
Prior to arriving at Northeastern, he was a graduate assistant at North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND. There, he completed his master’s degree in advanced athletic training and worked with the baseball program. As part of his master’s degree, he conducted research that was published in the the Journal of Athletic Training.
Prior to North Dakota State University, McKenney was a physician extender at Front Range Orthopaedics in Colorado Springs, CO. There, he worked closely with physicians to treat patients with various different orthopedic conditions while also providing outreach services for numerous organizations to include USA Cycling with velodrome track cycling and mountain bike racing. Additionally, he was an athletic trainer at Mesa Ridge High School and provided additional outreach services to high schools in Calhan and Peyton, Colorado.
McKenney also worked at the USA Volleyball High Performance Championships in 2012, been a volunteer for the United States Association of Blind Athletes at the World Youth and Student Games and Pan American Championships, and has served on the volunteer medical staff for the Boston Marathon.
Originally from Colorado Springs, McKenney completed his bachelor’s degree in athletic training at Gustavus Adolphus College in 2008. He is a corrective exercise specialist through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association, and a Massachusetts licensed athletic trainer. His professional interests include the intersection of technology and health care informatics in the high-performance setting, hydration, electrolyte replacement, and the application of evidence-based medicine.
