Mark Mastone joined the Northeastern sports performance staff in fall 2017, working primarily with the men’s ice hockey team.

Prior to arriving at Northeastern, he was a graduate assistant at MIT working with the football, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s track and field and men’s water polo teams. While there, he achieved his Master’s degree in Education from Boston University with a focus on sport psychology, performance psychology, and coaching pedagogy. His practicum presentation was titled “Self-Determination Theory and the Injured Athlete.”

Prior to his graduate assistant role, Mastone was a per diem athletic trainer at MIT, treating athletes from each of their 33 varsity sports. Concurrently, Mark worked as the director of sports medicine integration at Velocity Sports Performance in Norwood, Mass. There, he implemented movement based injury prevention measures into programs and facilitated “return to performance” programs for injured athletes. Mastone also has experience as a strength and conditioning coach at Young Performance – Gametime Fitness in Lowell, Mass., training middle school, high school, and collegiate athletes.

Originally from Tewksbury, Mass., Mastone completed his bachelor’s degree in athletic training at Northeastern in 2013. He completed two co-ops with NU’s sports medicine department and was a thrower on the track and field team. He is a Certified Athletic Trainer, licensed in the state of Massachusetts, and a member of the National Athletic Training Association. He is also a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist and a member of the National Strength & Conditioning Association. Mastone has a Level One SFMA certification through Functional Movement Systems. His professional interests include movement, postural restoration, neurophysiology, sport psychology, clinical education, and the application of evidence based medicine.
